The orchestral Variations on a Slovak Folk Song were written by Ján Cikker in October 1970. The composer was enchanted by the folk song To moje srdziečko (Oh, my heart), which he had found in Béla Bartók’s collection, and he elaborated it in rich variations. Soon after its triumphal Madrid premiere in 1935 Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor acquired the recognition of leading world performers. The same holds true for our renowned violinist Juraj Čižmarovič, whose BMF performance is connected with the artist’s jubilee. The legendary symphonic poem A Hero’s Life by Richard Strauss from 1898 delivered under the baton of the doyen of Slovak conductors Ondrej Lenárd, likewise celebrating an important milestone, promises an exceptional music experience.
