Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra has come to Bratislava to perform an exclusively
Slavic repertory. Overture for Strings by one of the most significant representatives of the
Polish music avantgarde Witold Lutosławski originated in the early period of the composer’s
work. It was written in 1949 and together with the Concerto for Orchestra and Funeral
Music it belongs among the author’s most popular juvenilia. The Violin Concerto No.
1 was created by the gravely suffering Dmitri Shostakovich in the time when the Soviet
cultural scene was overtaken by harsh ideological attacks on the so-called formalistic tendencies
in art. Also Shostakovich was the victim of these invectives. Therefore he decided
to postpone the premiere of the work to a more favourable period. The concerto dedicated
to David Oistrakh was premiered triumphally in 1955. The Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan
knows the piece intimately, and ‘he performs its contrasting moods with bravura’
(Kronen Zeitung, 2013).
In the authentic delivery of Bohemian musicians led by their new music director Alexander
Liebreich (since autumn 2018), Dvořák’s 8th Symphony will sound at the end of the night,
a work filled with vital joy and admiration of natural beauty.
