A piece ‘coming from another world, from eternity’ (H. von Karajan), the Ninth Symphony
of Gustav Mahler is the swan song and creative peak of the great Austrian composer. The
author wrote it in 1908–1909; however, he did not live to see it premiered in June 1912 in
Vienna, conducted by Bruno Walter. It is positively one of the most impressive works of
music of all times. The two last pages of the score take six minutes having only a minimum
number of notes. According to Leonard Bernstein a symphony symbolically anticipates
three forms of death: that of the composer himself, the death of the tonal harmony, and the
death of Faustian culture in all kinds of art. Philharmonia Orchestra London was established in 1932. It is an orchestra of unique artistic calibre with an ambition to address ever new listeners with the help of its music director, the Finn Esa-Pekka Salonen. The star orchestra with the star conductor: definitely a special experience!
